Today we celebrate our independence

From the tyrannical and uncaring rule

Of a minority of one.

Until this week.

On Monday, 1 July 2024,

The Supreme Court of the United States of America

Repealed freedom.

They did so without fireworks,

They did so without church bells,

No town crier walked the village square,

No mounted patriot rode through…

Yet in spite of the lack of fanfare,

An entire nation is transported back in time to the 18th century.

Is this how we “Make America Great Again”?

By reverting to a time when:

Women have no rights; they are subservient to the closest adult male,

Regardless of that man’s temperament.

Entire populations may be displaced,

Because they have no guns.

Disputes may be resolved in mortal combat,

So long as all parties agree on time, place, and choice of weapon.

One human may buy, sell, or own another human depending on skin coloration.

Some, it seems, feel that these are the things that once made our nation great –

Without understanding that we were not yet this nation,

That we too were subservient,

That our rights were restricted,

That we were overtaxed,

And that we were supposed to keep our mouths shut about it.

On 1 July 2024 six individuals out of our millions,

Have brought us back to a state of servitude to a single person,

And that is in no way great, good, fair or permissible!

On this Fourth of July, I beg you to remember true independence!

On this Fourth of July, I am asking you to pledge to return this nation

To its freedom from the tyranny of the minority,

And Make America Free Again.

Today is Independence Day.

Let us make all our days independence days.

Happy 4th of July, everyone.

The Edge

  The Edge   Out on the edge… This is where we exist, A precipice, A future unseen and unknowable, An edge we constantly walk. Here on the edge, We step forward blindly, Though we tell ourselves That we have planned well, But the future, Has no regard, For the mere mortal. Walking the edge, We may not see, What falls lie before us, What chasms may claim us, Nor how deeply they lurk. But know this: We have the strength, To climb out of darkness, If we but dare the edge again. Fear not brother! You are your own savior, If you but make the merest try. Do not despair sister! The unlooked-for hand, Will reach for you yet! Remember: From the bottom, The only way is up. Forward is the only motion, Time is allowed, In this frame we inhabit. Livin’ in a hotel, bumming dollars from the poor, Sellin’ your Chinese trinkets, maybe try it door to door.
